By Christine Wu
Have you ever wondered whose bright idea it was to get up in front of a room full of strangers and sing along to bad canned music?
Karaoke is a Japanese word that’s the combination of ‘Kara’ which means empty and ‘okie’ which means orchestra. The ‘empty orchestra’ is the karaoke music tract and the vocals are sung live by you.
Legend has it that karaoke was first performed in the 1970s in a bar in Kobe, Japan. Apparently the performer for that evening pulled a no show and the patrons were getting restless.
However, it has long been a custom in Japan to provide musical entertainment at dinner parties. It was in the 1970s that a smart guy called Daisuke Inoue invented the first coin operated karaoke machine. He rented his karaoke machines out to restaurants and bars. The modern karaoke system was born from this machine.
Karaoke soon spread throughout the rest of Asia in the 1980s and 1990s. Private room karaoke bars are common in Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea. Home karaoke machines also became common place in Asia. Sadly, this trend never really took off in the United States and Canada.
While karaoke in Asia is mostly performed in private boxes with a group of friends or at home karaoke parties, karaoke in the west took a different route.
Most people in the United States are familiar with karaoke nights at bars where you sing in front of a bunch of drunken strangers. For many people, the thought of the public humiliation and threat of getting hit by bar peanuts puts them off from ever trying to sing karaoke. In fact, I’m sure you would rather jump off a cliff than get up on stage and sing Barry Manilow at a karaoke bar.
But with your own Home Karaoke Machine, you can have fun and practice in the privacy of your own home. Sing by yourself or invite your friends for a karaoke party. You may be spared from public humiliation but you may still get pelted by popcorn if you can’t carry a tune.

Does the thought of singing karaoke in front of a room full of drunken strangers make you break out in a cold sweat? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Karaoke strikes fear in the hearts of millions of other people, even superheroes are not immune to the sway of open mic karaoke.

Singing karaoke doesn’t have to be an anxiety inducing event. Just follow these simple Do’s and Don’ts and you’ll be sure to wow the crowd and have a blast doing it.

DO…

Choose songs that you’re familiar with. You’ll want to sing songs that you know by heart, stuff that you belt out in the shower when you think the rest of your roommates can’t hear you.

Try to pick popular music that everybody would know. This really wins the audience over and crowd involvement makes karaoke a lot more fun.

Use the display to guide your timing. Lyrics are often displayed before ahead of time, this takes off the pressure of trying to remember a bunch of lyrics. Just have fun and pretend you’re little again and watching a sing-along video.

Listen to the vocal monitors that are pointed at you. Pay attention to how you sound. Are you shouting into the mic or singing so softly that no one can hear you? If you’re singing out of tune, you’ll hear it through the monitors. Use this feedback and spare your audience a torturous 3 minutes.

Do bring along a friend or four for moral support. Many times, people in the audience will be indifferent and this can put a damper on your karaoke machine. Ignore them and pretend you’re just joking around with your friends.

Practice and you’ll do better the next time. You may find that singing in public is the ultimate high. If you’ve survived your first karaoke experience, the worst is over. Practice and improve in private with your own Home Karaoke Machine. There’s tons of music available and full featured karaoke systems are cheap these days.

DON’T…

Overestimate your vocal abilities and choose difficult songs. You’ll just be setting yourself up for the ultimate nightmare karaoke experience short of finding yourself naked in front of the crowd.

Let indifferent audiences affect your performance.

Try to show off and ignore song and lyric cues. The graphic display is there for a reason.

Scream into the mic. You’ll get some awful feedback from the microphone and your audience.

Panic. Karaoke should be fun. Just relax, have a drink or two, and enjoy yourself.
